Habitat Nesting Boxes
Part of Ngurrala's charter is to provide accredited training to participants enabling them to gain fulltime employment. One of our products is a woodworking centre involving FIAA (Furnishing Industry Association of Australia) trainees manufacturing habitat nesting boxes and outdoor furniture.
These habitat nesting boxes have been designed in consultation with environmental consultants. We are now manufacturing 20 different types of boxes and can produce other boxes on application. Ngurrala can supply nesting boxes anywhere in Australia, but can only install them on the Mid North Coast.
Why is there a need for Wildlife Boxes?
There are many animals and birds that use natural tree hollows for nesting and breeding as about 20% of our Australian wildlife don't build nests. Nesting hollows were once common in forest and woodlands. The hollowing process is a long one, they are formed as trees grow old, fungus and termites eat out the deadwood in the centre to create the hollows.
The Eucalyptus tree and related species develop the most useful hollows. These hardwood trees live for hundreds of years and consequently countless generations of animals use their hollows. The hollows start very small, making homes for insects such as wasp and spiders, as the tree ages the hollows becomes larger and provide homes for other creaturers such as; tree Frogs, Lorikeets and native Bees.
Many more years go by and the hollows then house larger animals such as; Greater Gliders and Possums. By the time the cavities inside the tree are large enough to house much larger creaturers such as; Powerful Owls and Black Cockatoos these trees could be hundreds of years old. When trees succumb to the elements and fall to the ground, ground dwelling animals such as Echidnas, Forest Dragons etc. use them as their homes.
Those hollows that took such a long time to develop are being lost for many reasons
- One of the biggest tragedies is the clearing of our native forest through logging. Old growth trees are being logged even though they are of inferior value as to millable timbers.
- Backburning in certain parts of the country result in the loss of old trees and with some farmers feeling the need to increase their farming capacities, are felling trees and nesting logs are destroyed.
- As developers clear land, enviromental experts and councils are required to replacement of the lost trees and nesting logs.
We need to protect trees with hollows in them in order not to lose the native wildlife that live in them.
Nesting boxes should not be seen as a subtitute for hollows.
Nevertheless, where natural wildlife habitats have been destroyed, nesting boxes are a functional alternative. They can also be used as an educational tool, they can attract ainimals and birds that can be observed in their natural surroundings.
