Ngurrala green-Team
OVERVIEW
The Green Team Project was first considered around June 2003 where several partners contributed to its estabishment; these partners were: Ngurrala Aboriginal Corporation, Nambucca Heads Local Aboriginal Land Council (Terrence Hudson & Larry Kelly) through a program called Engaging Aboriginal Communities in Natural Resource Management, funded through the Catchment Management Authority, North Coast Institute of TAFE and Farmbis. The greenteam project then started to operate in 2004.
TRAINING
Training was set up for twelve (12) CDEP participants to undertake Certificate II in Conservation & Land Management (Natural Area Restoration) through Mid North Coast Institute of TAFE. Another part of the original training concept was to have the participants identify sacred Aboriginal sites and have them entered onto the Nambucca Heads Local Aboriginal Land Council's database for future referrence.
PROJECTS
One of the first projects that was completed by the greenteam was the Nambucca Shire Council's Crosswinds Wetland Park located in Macksville NSW. Since its conception the greenteam has gone from strength to strength winning the Tidy Towns competition award and several outstanding recognition mentions.
FUTURE PLANS
We currently have three (3) members of the Greenteam doing their Diploma in Conservation & Land Management and three (3) doing the Certificate level III in the same field of study. It is envisaged that the current participants will be mentors for other indigenous people to obtain training in this field, the aim so to look after their country and apply Aboriginal knowledge, techniques and skills to improve the overall wellbeing of the land.
